In the Shadowfell valley of Barovia, a bastion of gothic horror looms over the land. A monolithic stronghold whose impact stretches beyond the Shadowfell and into the prime material plane itself. Haunted by its egomaniacal master and steeped in arcane horrors, one iconic citadel of dread looms large in the minds and hearts of players and DM's alike. Its name? Castle Ravenloft.
Whether you're a seasoned adventurer preparing to breach its walls or a DM tasked with weaving a dread-filled narrative set within its treacherous chambers, Castle Ravenloft holds nearly a world's worth of secrets, twists, and plot hooks that can not afford to be overlooked. Read on, dear reader, and arm yourself with the knowledge and strategies you need to brave its shadowed chambers. If you're lucky, you just might survive your encounter with the castle's keeper, Count Strahd Von Zarovich himself.
The Origin of Castle Ravenloft
For Dungeons & Dragons fans, when the themes of gothic horror are invoked, Castle Ravenloft remains the pinnacle of the genre. Its imposing spires and darkened battlements overshadow Barovia's perpetual darkness, a constant reminder of the pervasive dread that defines the domain.
The legacy of Castle Ravenloft is one of the oldest in D&D history. Dating back all the way to 1983, making its debut within the pages of the 1st edition adventure module, Ravenloft. Since its debut, Castle Ravenloft has become one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most iconic landmarks, earning a place in fans' minds as the pinnacle of TTRPG horror.
But the legacy of this famed castle sits atop a domain that embodies chaos incarnate, whose denizens are subject to the horrors of the Shadowfell and to Strahd's influence. Before we step through the doors of Castle Ravenloft, first, let’s learn more about the land which Ravenloft calls home.
Welcome to Barovia
Your journey to Castle Ravenloft will begin in the land of Barovia, a region of the Shadowfell perpetually shrouded in unnatural mists that trap those who enter, leaving them in eternal darkness and severing their connection to the outside world. Those familiar with Barovia know these mists to be the first layer of Strahd’s twisted scheme to secure his dominance over the Shadowfell. All who live within Barovia are forced to spend an eternity within, sacrificing their very existence in service to Strahd himself.
Adventurers drawn to Barovia must practice caution, as the wrong move could corner even the bravest knight into a cursed life as a pawn in Strahd's larger schemes. The story of Barovia is the story of Strahd's personal playground, so there's no better way to familiarize yourself with the region and Castle Ravenloft itself than to get to know the man who calls the castle his home.
The History of Strahd and His Domain
The saga of Strahd Von Zarovich is one of ambition, betrayal, and perhaps worse, heartbreak. Once a valiant warrior who conquered the valley of Barovia, Strahd's life took a dark turn when he fell for the beautiful Tatyana. Unfortunately for Strahd, his love was not reciprocated, and as one might expect from a villain of his caliber, rejection wasn't handled well. In a bloody twist of fate, Strahd swore his soul to dark powers and, in so doing, became the vampire we know today. Tatyana, horrified by the man before her, threw herself from the walls of Castle Ravenloft. It was Tatyana's sacrifice that forever cemented her connection to the domain, and led to the life of unending grief which cursed Strahd Von Zarovich.
This is the tragedy that serves as the foundation upon which Castle Ravenloft stands today. Now that you know the backstory, let's explore the castle itself and the secrets it holds within its walls.
Essential Prep Before You Enter Castle Ravenloft
A warning and pre-emptive scolding to players currently enjoying an adventure featuring Castle Ravenloft: the following is best fit for DM EYES ONLY. Spoilers ahead. In other words, if your DM doesn't expect you to have this information already, scram!
In Curse of Strahd, players will encounter a number of NPCs who warn them against entering Castle Ravenloft, but if they are dead set on walking towards their doom, some will equip them with tools to prepare for it. In particular, with the aid of the Tarokka Deck, a tarot-style fortune-telling deck created for the Ravenloft setting.
The Tarokka Deck
If tarot isn't your thing, you might overlook the Tarokka Deck entirely. But when it comes to Castle Ravenloft, the Tarokka Deck serves a much greater purpose than fortune-telling. For players hoping to enter the castle walls, a visit to the iconic NPC "Madame Eva" is a must, as her Tarokka reading will likely be the single most bountiful source of information on the twisted halls of Castle Ravenloft.
The enigmatic Vistani seer, Madame Eva, interprets the arcane spread of the Tarokka Deck for any adventurer brave enough to take on Strahd. Her divinations will help players determine 5 crucial pieces of information needed to prep before entering the castle, including the exact locations of key magical artifacts and weapons, Strahd’s greatest adversary, and even Strahd himself.
Key Locations of Castle Ravenloft and Their Secrets
Castle Ravenloft is a complex tapestry of halls, chambers, and secret passages. Key rooms include the main towers, the chapel, the dungeons, and the extensive servant quarters. Understanding the castle's general layout, including the notorious Brazier Room (secretly one of the deadliest rooms in the castle) and its vital role in controlling certain defenses, can provide a tactical advantage. The dungeons beneath the castle are particularly perilous, often holding dark secrets and dangerous prisoners.
There is much more to Castle Ravenloft beyond what meets the eye; hiding within its walls are locations of much importance. In one particular room sits The Heart of Sorrow, a nexus of dark energy that protects Strahd from attacks, absorbing incoming damage on his behalf. The chapel, with its desecrated altar, and the crypts containing the remains of the Zarovich lineage, including the tragic Sergei (whom Tatyana loved in Strahd's stead), hold significant lore and potential clues. While players may want to get out of Castle Ravenloft as quickly as they entered, exploring its shadowed halls will reveal some much-needed information.
Combat, Monsters, and Survival in the Castle
Survival within Castle Ravenloft is a constant battle against overwhelming odds, and will require careful resource management, tactical combat, and an awareness of Strahd's psychological manipulations. Ultimately, Castle Ravenloft is a massive and complex dungeon, with random encounters to navigate and secrets to uncover before they are ready for their final confrontation with Strahd. Once you’re inside the castle, players might be tempted to take the fight straight to Strahd, but exploring its sprawling halls to find hidden game changers like the Heart of Sorrow will give you an advantage that shouldn’t be overlooked.
If you’re running Curse of Strahd, the earlier chapters of the adventure will guide players towards key magical weapons and equipment that are uniquely suited to combat Strahd. The Sunsword, in particular, is a potent weapon against vampires, and its use in the party’s encounter against Strahd can dramatically shift the tide of battle.
Strahd's Minions and Monsters
Castle Ravenloft is far from empty. It is patrolled by loyal Vampire Spawn, monstrous creatures, and haunted by the tormented souls of its past. Among the living, players will encounter familiar and all-new NPCs such as:
- Rahadin - Strahd’s right-hand man, and main accomplice
- Cyrus Belview - Strahd’s hunchbacked servant
- Pidlwick II - Strahd’s court jester
Some will serve as allies, some will serve as enemies, but within the walls of Castle Ravenloft, no one can really be trusted for long.
Facing Vampire Spawn, dreaded assassins like Rahadin, and other monstrous denizens requires coordinated tactics. Keep in mind, Castle Ravenloft is home to vampires, meaning their weaknesses, such as their aversion to sunlight and holy symbols, can be critical.
Conquering Castle Ravenloft
The journey through Castle Ravenloft is arduous, fraught with peril and despair. Yet, within its shadowed halls lies the potential for triumph and the unraveling of an ancient curse. The formidable presence of one of D&D's most iconic adversaries, Strahd Von Zarovich, ensures that any adventure within its walls will be a test of courage, wit, and endurance. Between its traps, vampire spawn inhabitants, and Strahd himself, even the most seasoned adventurers just might break under the pressure. Yet, exploring Castle Ravenloft and confronting Strahd is almost a rite of passage for D&D players, and something that every player should experience at least once.
