D&D 2026 Roadmap: Upcoming Releases, Seasons, and What to Expect
APR 02, 2026
In recent months, the question of what lies ahead for Dungeons & Dragons might have been a bit hard to answer. While Wizards of The Coast made it clear that something was coming, after the 5.5e release, fans began to wonder what would come next for D&D, and for a while, it didn’t seem like much was on the horizon. Of course, concerns wouldn’t go unanswered for long.
On March 3rd, Wizards of The Coast unveiled their new "Seasons" roadmap model, designed to structure the year of releases around the core thematic pillars of D&D. The remainder of 2026 will be framed as "seasons," which will focus on themes of horror, magic, and championship, with new sourcebooks, adventures, character options, and even the return of popular settings like the Shadowfell (and maybe even Dark Sun?).
Most promisingly, the Seasons release model signals a future that will feature engaging content on a reliable and regular schedule. With each passing month, fans will always have the next thing to look forward to, whether it's the spooky sourcebooks of the horror season, or the spellbound supplements of the magic season. This is certainly a new approach for D&D releases, but still, one that is in line with their latest design philosophy which encourages the creative exploration of genre and narrative.
The Three Pillars: Horror, Magic, and Champions
Each of the Seasons are meant to represent one of the many pillars of D&D, but it’s still not clear if these will be the recurring themes each year, or if these themes will only stick around for 2026. It's possible that we'll see the seasons release model return for 2027, this time highlighting different themes, but its too early to tell what next years plan will be. Still, we know that the Seasons roadmap will kick off in June with the Season of Horror.
Season of Horror: The Shadows Return
The roadmap starts with the Season of Horror, marking a profound return to one of Dungeons & Dragons' most popular realms, the Shadowfell. This season is poised to plunge players and DMs into the Shadowfell's world of fear and suspense, building upon the realm's rich lore that has captivated fans for decades. Expect the return of fan favorites such as Ravenloft, Strahd Von Zarovich, and even the return of some long-forgotten subclasses.
With the Seasons of Horror featured release, Wizards of the Coast is bringing us back to Ravenloft for the first time since 2021's Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. Ravenloft: The Horrors Within marks the first official return to the Domains of Dread in half a decade; however, the book is set to serve both players and Dungeon Masters as a toolkit for horror-themed game options, with Ravenloft serving just as a framing device. Piloted by longtime D&D designer F. Wesley Schneider, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within functions as a sprawling sourcebook for setting-agnostic horror-themed campaigns rather than as an official adventure module.
For DMs
On the DM side, Ravenloft: The Horrors within further expands the Domains of Dread (the domains of Shadowfell, including Strahd's Barovia), with new monsters, NPCs, and general guidance for running horror-based campaigns across multiple subgenres from gothic horror and dark fantasy, to the occult and cosmic horror. Plus, special appearances from D&D icons like Van Richten himself, and for the first time since Curse of Strahd, more Strahd Von Zarovich.
At launch, physical editions of the sourcebook will include some exciting accessories, including a new Tarokka deck, a Ravenloft-themed DM screen, and a map pack featuring five double-sided poster maps.
For Players
On the player side, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within is just as generous, featuring several new horror-themed subclasses, many of which are speculated to feature some new classes updated for 5.5e, and some playtest classes from earlier in 2025. While these classes aren't yet officially confirmed, it's looking very likely that a couple of fan favorite Unearthed Arcana classes will be returning, including the Reanimator Artificer and Hollow Warden Ranger. Plus, some returning classes such as the College of Spirits Bard, or the Undead Warlock, last seen in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft.
But the experience wouldn't be complete without a few new playable species. Reportedly, Ravenloft: The Horror Within will see the return of the Dhampir (most recently seen in Astarion's Book of Hungers), the Hexblood, the Reborn, and, for the first time ever, the Lupin, a werewolf-themed species.
Season of Magic: Unfathomable Arcana
As the Season of Horror fades into the mist, Wizards of the Coast pivots into a new direction, trading the weird for the wonderful. From July through September, the Season of Magic will put the focus on the arcane side of D&D, celebrating spellcraft and sorcery. Unlike the single-anchored release of the Season of Horror, this season is built around two books under the shared umbrella title "Arcana Unleashed". This time, the Season of Magic offers not only a sourcebook with tons of new player options, but an adventure module, Deadfall, that promises the return of one of D&D's most popular factions: The Red Wizards of Thay. Plus, in August, the Season of Magic will be complemented by a set of reference cards covering spells, monsters, and magic items, all revised for the 5.5e ruleset.
Arcana Unleashed
Arcana Unleashed serves as this season's sourcebook. Already positioned as the definitive high-magic supplement for 5.5e, Arcana Unleashed promises a few things that will forever change the arcane world of Dungeons and Dragons: a new magic item system, new subclasses, new feats, and new spells. On the DM side, the new magic item system introduces mechanics that allow magical artifacts to grow alongside their players, making it twice as easy to aid your players in defining their builds. On the player side, Arcana Unleashed promises nine new subclasses, including the Conjurer and Enchanter Wizards from the 2025 Unearthed Arcana playtest.
Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall
Releasing alongside the Arcana Unleashed sourcebook is the first adventure expansion on the roadmap, Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall. In Deadfall, players follow the Red Wizards of Thay as they wage a new Wizard War. While the Red Wizards haven't made any appearances in book releases as of late, fans might recognize the Red Wizards of Thay from their appearance in D&D: Honor Among Thieves, where they threatened to plunge all of Faerûn into darkness. The Red Wizards are among D&D lore's most enduring antagonists, a magocracy built on oppression and ambition, and Deadfall marks their long-awaited return to center stage in a major release.
Season of Champions: Forging Legends
The year comes to an end with the Season of Champions. After a jampacked year full of the macabre and the mystical, things come to a concrete conclusion with the martial. With this release, the furthest off, its contents remain a mystery to most. While we know this season will run from October through December, for now, Wizards of The Coast is keeping the details close to the chest. However, judging from prior releases, signs point to this release being the martial counterpart to the series, focusing on fighters, warriors, and physical combat rather than arcane power.
Taking a look at Unearthed Arcana, the recently tested Gladiator Fighter subclass is expected to make its debut here, along with some more yet to be seen martial subclasses, likely around 6-7 more. On that same note, some fans have speculated about the return of the Dark Sun setting, a dystopian gladiatorial battleground that invites the greatest combatants from far and wide to test their mettle.
For now, very little is confirmed, but expect to hear something soon. The 2026 roadmap promises a reliable and clearly communicated release schedule, with plenty of streamlined content for players of all types. Best, it represents a change for D&D that leans into its theme and genre, allowing players to immerse themselves in the narratives and adventures they’ve always wanted. Horror, magic, and champions offer three distinct tones for three distinct audiences, giving players countless reasons to try something new in their D&D play in 2026.
Reminiscent of video game patches and DLC drops, Wizards of the Coast’s decision to commit to a seasonal roadmap promises a year of releases, a wise move that should keep players seated around the table throughout the year as they eagerly await what comes next.
