Create Character Now

The 2024 D&D Player’s Handbook brings big changes to crafting and tool proficiencies in D&D. Whether you’re blacksmithing weapons or an alchemist brewing potions, these new rules give you clear guidance and more opportunities to be creative with your characters.

But what benefits do these updates bring to your in-game experience, and how can you make sure that you get the most out of them? Let’s take a look at some of the new additions and changes to crafting from the 2024 DMG.

2024 Brings Reimagined Tool Proficiencies

The biggest change is the complete reworking of tool proficiencies (how well you can use different tools). In previous editions, tool proficiencies were often seen as an afterthought or a way to add flavor to a character. But in 2024, they are now integral to crafting and other tasks.

Every tool in the Player’s Handbook now has specific, concrete functions via the new “use” action. So, your character’s proficiency with a tool isn’t just a passive bonus – it’s an active part of the game you can use in different situations.

Each tool now shows:

  • Which ability scores can be used with the tool
  • What actions you can take with the tool
  • What items you can craft with the tool
  • How the tool can be used in combat and exploration

Artisan’s Tools and Crafting

The new crafting system really comes alive with Artisan’s Tools. Each set of tools now has its own list of craftable items, so there’s a clear connection between proficiencies and creation options. For example:

  • Smith’s Tools: Craft weapons and armor
  • Alchemist’s Supplies: Create potions and alchemical items
  • Cartographer’s Tools: Make maps
  • Leatherworker’s Tools: Fashion leather armor and accessories
  • Woodcarver’s Tools: Make wooden items and tools

These new, unique crafting options allow players to use their skills and tools in a more purposeful way, and offers more agency in the world and adding another layer of depth to character customization.

Making Magic More Accessible

One of the best new features is the inclusion of magical item crafting in the Player’s Handbook. Players can now craft:

  • Potions of Healing
  • Spell Scrolls
  • Basic magical items

These items – which were previously in the Dungeon Master’s Guide –are now part of the core crafting system. This makes magical item creation a bigger part of the game, especially for spellcasters (who may need an extra hand or two from their party members).

Expanded Equipment Options

To support the new crafting system, the Player’s Handbook has introduced even more equipment. Every item in the adventuring gear table now has a full entry describing what it does and how to use it.

Some of the new items that have been added to support the crafting system include:

  • Various types of maps with mechanical benefits
  • New alchemical substances
  • More tools and materials
  • Specialized crafting components

The Economics of Crafting

The new crafting system has a full economic framework so players have ways to invest their gold. Material costs are clearly defined, rare components cost more but give better results. Time investment for different items varies greatly - simple items take a few hours, complex magical items take weeks or months of dedicated work.

For efficiency-minded crafters, there are several ways to speed up the process. Working with other skilled crafters, using special tools or magical assistance can reduce crafting time.

The system also supports bulk crafting, which allows multiple items to be crafted at once when making simple objects. And clear guidelines for selling crafted items so players can turn their crafting into a profitable business.

Tools in Action

The new "utilize" action turns tools from passive proficiencies into active gameplay. A cartographer can create detailed tactical maps during dungeon exploration and get an advantage in upcoming encounters. An alchemist can analyze mysterious substances found during adventures and learn about their properties and origins.

Blacksmiths find their skills useful in the field, repairing broken equipment or modifying weapons for the situation. Even simple tools like woodcarvers' implements can be super useful, creating an impromptu solution to an unexpected problem.

Time and Resources

Resource management is key to crafting. Each project requires specific materials and costs vary based on quality and rarity. Time requirements are clearly defined, from quick projects that can be done during a short rest to epic projects that take weeks of dedicated work.

The system acknowledges the realities of adventuring life and has rules for interrupting and resuming projects when duty calls. Whether crafting during downtime or frantically crafting during a brief break from adventure, the system stays balanced and consistent.
