Doric, played by Sophia Lillis in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, is an unassuming Tiefling just beginning to find her place in the world of the Forgotten Realms. Abandoned by her human parents as a girl because of her infernal nature, Doric learned to survive in the wild on her own. One day, by a twist of fate – or maybe magic? – a kind wood elf found Doric and took her home to live with her. Doric never felt truly at home among the elves, however. Could the new allies she meets in Neverwinter become the found family she’s always yearned for?

Origin Story

Doric’s Tiefling heritage helped her make it through the lonely days and cold nights as a child.  But it wasn’t until she went to live with the elvish rangers of the Neverwinter Woods that she began to thrive. Tieflings are easily identifiable, often sporting large horns and swishing tails, and are generally distrusted because of those demonic traits. With those features, combined with her rare druid abilities, Doric found it difficult to completely fit in among the elves. When her mentor suggested training with the druids in the Emerald Enclave to hone her blossoming powers, Doric started a magical new journey of self-discovery.

Druid Characteristics

Druids in Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition have strong bonds with the natural world. Some feel particularly powerful connections with plants, animals, or elemental forces. Protecting nature is a shared goal among all druids. When you’re creating your druidic character, think about what they specialize in. Are they partial to plants? Or, like Doric, do they feel a strong bond with animals and other creatures of the forest?

Doric wears green and brown leather armor pieces. Like all druids, she has a proficiency in light armor. A sling is her weapon of choice. Her magic is where her true power lies, and she discovers she has a knack for Wild Shape. While your character can’t use Wild Shape to turn into a snowy owlbear like Doric (unless your Dungeon Master allows it), you can think about what beast shape they might be partial to, and why.

Creating Your Own Druid Like Doric

Is the power of nature calling to you? You can create a Tiefling druid just like Doric for your own D&D campaign! Druids use Wisdom for their spellcasting ability; that means that Wisdom should be your character’s highest ability score. Druids use their Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a spell and when making an Attack roll against an unlucky foe. Their other saving throw is Intelligence, so make that your druid’s second highest ability score.

A Tiefling is often born to human parents who have an infernal heritage that was hidden until their birth. In addition to their horns and tail, some Tieflings bear sharp teeth or uncanny eyes of solid black, red, white, silver, or gold. They also have enhanced vision and a resistance to fire as a result of the demonic legacy in their bloodline. Consider the traits your Tiefling has and how others have reacted to them as they’ve grown up.

Animal Handling and Nature round out your first skills as a druid like Doric. As for your character’s Background, choose Outlander in the Player’s Handbook to denote the druid as a wanderer. Why did they leave their people? What drives your druid to explore, and what are they looking for?

Druids choose a Druid Circle at 2nd level. Pick Circle of the Land, also from the Player’s Handbook, to echo Doric’s powerful connection to the Neverwinter Woods.
